This happens more in the city than the wilderness but it’s terrible at breaking the immersion, or indeed the incentive to explore. One minute you’re wandering through an entire town, entering every building and room without a problem, and the next you’re being made to endure a loading screen just to go inside a matchbox-sized hovel. Around half of the buildings you go into will require a good seven seconds or more of loading to enter, but the rules for which do or don’t are baffling. Instead, what’s most frustrating about the tech side of things is the load times.

There are lots of other smaller glitches, with companions often sinking through the floor if incapacitated, but generally the game is more bug free than you might have feared. The frame rate is also not entirely stable, and although serious slowdown is rare minor problems are commonplace. The open world environment can often look very good, but the lighting system ranges from the impressive to the half broken – especially a weird light bloom effect that often seems to be used for no obvious reason. The quality of the graphics for human characters, including the facial animation, is surprisingly poor throughout – and in many cases would’ve seemed mediocre on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. You can convince any of 12 different characters to accompany you on your travels and they’re a generally likeable bunch, including a synthetic private eye, a spunky news reporter, and, of course, Dogmeat the Alsatian.īut your companions show up some of the game’s most obvious technical limitations. The dialogue can be a little workmanlike but it’s a lot more economical than the often rambling monologues in BioWare games. The latter is still possible in many major encounters though, allowing you to try and talk down characters in sequences that are often far more tense than a simple gunfight.

The upgrade system for your character is excellent, in terms of the wide range of options it offers in such an accessible way (and the lack of a level cap), but you really have to make the effort to specialise in stealth or diplomacy.
